Since factories, oil refineries, printing works and sawmills all produce goods, it makes sense to handle all their raw materials in one place.

Placement of industries

If you have enough money to build industries willy-nilly, find a place near the map edge where you can build several of them close together, then build a single station around them. Bear in mind the possible restrictions:

  • Oil refineries are the most constrained, as they must be close to the map edge.

  • Factories might be unsuitable for desert terrain.

  • Additional GRFs may require industries to be near towns, or may impose other annoying restrictions.

Materials drop-off

This will be a major station, so make sure that trains can deposit the various cargo types quickly. Employ the following techniques:

  • Use pre-signals to load-balance a track onto several platforms.

  • Use deceleration track as long as the platforms, so that trains clear the load-balancing points as soon as possible.

  • Use an escape depot to absorb excess traffic during breakdowns.

  • Triplicate everything! Use a 3-track crossover to help load-balance incoming lines.

  • Don't pick anything up from these platforms!

You might also have room to fit an international airport to quickly deliver perishable materials directly to the site. (Again, don't use this to fly out goods. Planes waiting for goods would clog it up.) You could reasonably add a dock here too.

Goods pick-up

To ship the goods out, use an isolated loop of track to move them to another location:

  • An isolated track ensures that these platforms are dedicated to picking up goods, and the other platforms won't clog up with waiting goods trains.

Isolated track is also convenient when upgrading track. And there are no junctions so it's easy to build dual lanes for resilience.

  • Place the isolated loop at a completely different level to the drop-off loop. They will probably have to cross each other at several places anyway.

  • Use shorter platforms and trains, so they don't spend a long time filling up.

  • The distribution point may include an airport, and mainline platforms for other trains (again, isolated from this loop).
